Abstract(s)
comunicação e as dificuldades familiares.
Bedtime routines are the predictable activities that occur before a child falls asleep, promoting healthy development during early childhood. Family functioning reflects the dynamics through which family members solve problems, communicate, interact and care for each other. This study aims to contribute to the knowledge of paternal perception of the bedtime routines of preschool children and their relationship with family functioning. The sample consists of 107 fathers of children between 3 and 6 years old (M = 3.99; SD = 0.85), who completed the Portuguese versions of the Bedtime Routines Questionaire (BRQ), an instrument that assesses consistency, reactivity and adaptive and maladaptive activities before bedtime and the Systematic Clinical Outcome and Routine Evaluation (SCORE-15), which assesses resources, communication and family difficulties. The results indicate that fathers with less education perceive greater reactivity in their children when changing their bedtime routine and more maladaptive activities, as well as worse communication in the family, more difficulties and worse family functioning. Fathers with a lower SES perceive more difficulties in family functioning. It was found that worse family functioning is associated with greater reactivity and more maladaptive activities of children at bedtime, while better family functioning is associated with more adaptive activities. Finally, the implications of the study for intervention with families with preschool-age children are discussed.
