Abstract(s)
O membro fantasma, encarado como um mistério da medicina durante
séculos, é uma consequência comum depois de uma amputação, podendo
ocorrer em 80% dos casos. As causas centrais devem ser encaradas como
major já que existe evidência da relação entre alterações corticais e as
sensações fantasma (objectivada por exames de imagem como a MEG).
Contudo, factores periféricos e psicológicos podem também contribuir. Até hoje
poucas abordagens terapêuticas eficazes foram propostas e a maioria dos
estudos carece de evidência científica. Os “fantasmas” poderão ser um
contributo para a compreensão da organização e plasticidade do cérebro
humano.
Phantom limb is a common sequel of amputation of a body part, occurring in up to 80% of people who undergo the procedure, and such phenomenon has been a mysterious part of medicine for many centuries. Central changes seem to be a major determinant as recent studies link changes in cortex with perceptual experience (as we can see in studies using MEG). However, peripheral and psychological factors may contribute to it. As few effective treatments for phantom-limb pain have been proposed and most published reports are based on anecdotal evidence, further study is worthwhile. Phantoms can teach us substantial lessons about the organisation and plasticity of the brain.
