Abstract(s)
A Beira Baixa, devido ao seu posicionamento geográfico e à sua localização no interior de um país com escassas vias de comunicação, viveu isolada de contacto com outros povos. Ao longo da história, as passagens de outros povos por estas terras deveu-se sempre a incursões com carácter bélico. Os povos de toda esta região, cercada por serras e matagais, desenvolveram um modo de vida próprio, metidos no seu isolamento, criando um perfil desconfiado e reservado que, naturalmente, a experiência da história lhe ensinou.
A cultura destes povos passou de geração em geração, tendo um saber singular em relação às restantes regiões do país, mais permeáveis pela geografia a influências externas. A literatura popular da Beira Baixa constitui, deste modo, um caso único, um acervo ancestral vivo em pequenas localidades isoladas. Os provérbios e os ditos populares desempenham um papel bastante importante nas mais diversas comunidades. Estas frases representam o saber acumulado pelos povos, com o seu viver ao longo dos tempos. Por vezes, encontramos provérbios ou, simplesmente, ditos iguais com pequenas diferenças em quase toda a Beira Baixa. Noutras ocasiões, surgem-nos outros que somente encontramos numa ou outra localidade.
Ao elaborar estudos no âmbito etnográfico nos mais diversificados temas, encontrámos algumas semelhanças. Entre as diversas localidades, variam, por vezes, palavras, nomes ou expressões de que os povos se apropriaram ao longo dos tempos, dando-lhe um cunho próprio do local onde vivem. Esta herança tem vindo a transmitir uma carga cultural resultado da entrega de elementos muito significativos da tradição oral de geração em geração.
“Beira Baixa” due to its geographical positioning and location in the inner part of a country with few roads, has lived isolated from the contact with other peoples. Through history, the passing of other peoples has always been linked to incursions of a warlike character. The peoples of this entire region, enclosed by mountains and bush areas, have developed their own way of living, exposed to their isolation, giving birth to a suspicious and shy profile that naturally history has taught them. The culture of these peoples has passed from generation to generation, having a singular erudition in relation to the other regions of the country which are more permeable due to their geography and external influences. Popular literature from “Beira Baixa” constitutes, in this way, a unique case, an ancestral heap alive in small isolated areas. The proverbs and popular sayings play an important part in the various communities. These sentences and sayings represent an accumulated knowledge by the peoples, with their living through the times. In some cases the same proverbs or sayings can be found with few differences in practically all “Beira Baixa”. In other occasions, others appear which can only be found in certain areas. By elaborating studies in the ethnographical scope in various topics, some similarities were found. From one place to another, sometimes words, names or phrases vary and the peoples take possession of them through the times giving them their own marks of the place where they live. This inheritance has been transmitting a cultural load resulting from the delivery of very signifying elements of oral tradition transmitted from generation to generation.
