Abstract(s)
sexualidade.
Introduction The old age is a state of the life cycle where we usually find stereotypes concerning several dimensions. Among these the sexuality (despite being a right) is often undervalued, denied, and even ridiculed, despite it is an essential dimension of welfare and life quality. Institutionalized elderly people, especially those with dementia, have greater obstacles in the way of living and expressing their sexual interests due the reduced autonomy and privacy and the difficulties inherent to their pathology. Thus, professionals play an important role in preventing inappropriate sexual conduct as well as in promoting practices that meet sexual needs. Objectives This study aims to characterize and compare the behavior of Portuguese professionals who work with institutionalized elderly people in situations of sexual intercourse in which one of the users has dementia or when both have or not this clinical condition. Another purpose of the research consists of evaluating the frequency with which professionals encounter sexual intercourse and how often they occur in their workplace. Materials and Methods 538 professionals from 29 portuguese long-term care facilities participated in the study. Data were collected between February and April 2019 using a paper questionnaire in the form of technical vignettes, developed by Villar et al. (2017) in Spain, with subsequent translation and retroversion for the Portuguese population. Data were analyzed using Software Package for Social Sciences, version 25.0, and were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics with a significance level of 0.05. Results The results revealed that sexual relations are perceived by professionals as problematic, especially in cases where users suffer from dementia. In the three situations presented the most selected reaction was âComment on what happened with supervision or directionâ. The most restrictive practices were most often chosen when only one user has dementia. Conclusion The existence of difficulties and negative attitudes towards the sexuality of patients with dementia suggests the need to provide professionals with clear training / interventions / protocols for specific sexual situations, in order to provide them with knowledge and strategies that allow residents to enjoy their sexuality.
