Abstract(s)
This study intended to examine the influence of plyometric training on improving the physical performance of university handball players, namely in shooting power in both support and suspension, in vertical and horizontal jumping capability and in sprint. We also investigated the detraining effects in all variables after 12 weeks. A total of 14 male university handball players were assessed, with the following characteristics: 21.93 ± 2.79 years of age, 1.80 ± 0.05 m in height, 75.93 ± 9.91 kg of body weight and 11.29 ± 2.40 years of practice of the sport. At the end of the implementation of the programs, the subjects improved: 8.8% in shot in support; 5.3% in shot in suspension; 5.1% in horizontal jump; 24.6% in vertical jump; and 7.4% in sprint. After the termination period of plyometric training, participants showed significant reductions in performance 6.7% in shot in support, 3.9% in shot in suspension, 3.4% in the horizontal jump, 13.7% in the vertical jump and 6.1% in sprint. These results clearly indicate that the inclusion of plyometric training during the competitive phase of a university handball team can significantly enhance the physical performance of the athletes in key aspects such as shooting, jumping and sprint. However, we could observed a significant decrement in all these variables.
