Abstract(s)
This report consists of three chapters: Chapter I related to the professional experience in research, Chapter II related to the professional internship in community pharmacy and Chapter III related to professional internship in hospital pharmacy. Chapter I describes the research work developed at the Research Center for Health Sciences, University of Beira Interior. The main purpose of the research work was to determine the antimicrobial activity of plant extracts against distinct microorganisms, including Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts. More specifically, four plant extracts, in particular the hydroalcoholic extract of Echinacea purpurea, the acetone, methanol and methanol 70% extracts of Helychrisum italicum; and five essential oils, in particular from Foeniculum vulgare, Margotia gumífera, Mentha cervina, Origanum majorana and Ridolfia segetum were tested against 5 strains of Gram-positive bacteria, 9 strains of Gram-negative bacteria and 14 strains of yeasts. The results suggest that the essential oil Ridolfia segetum (MIC=2.5-0.31µL/ml) and Mentha cervina (MIC=2.5-0.16µL/ml) exhibit good antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeast. In turn, the essential oil of Foeniculum vulgare demonstrates an interesting anti-Candida activity (MIC=0.63-2.5µL/mL). The remaining tested plant extracts showed a reduced or absent antimicrobial activity. Chapter II reports the internship in Community Pharmacy that occurred between January 26th and April 17th of 2015, at Farmácia Perdigão (Caldas da Rainha), under the guidance of Dr.ª Maria José Perdigão. This chapter describes the activities developed during the internship, beginning with the circuit of the drug, the dispensing of drugs and health products, the management of the pharmacy and ending with the pharmacist advice. Chapter III reports the internship in Hospital Pharmacy that occurred between April 20th and June 12th h of 2015, at Hospital Amato Lusitano (Castelo Branco) under the guidance of Dr.ª Sandra Queimado. This chapter describes the activities developed during the internship, focusing administrative functions and clinical functions that the pharmacist performs in hospital.
