Abstract(s)
Considerando o crescente envelhecimento
género, a idade, as qualificações e o estatuto socioeconómico; as múltiplas dificuldades
The average life expectancy is increasing and the chronicity of diseases and the increase in dependence are aggravated. Considering the growing demographic aging and the relevance of informal care of dependent elderly people, this research aims to understand the subjective experience of being an informal caregiver from a gender perspective. First there was a literature review whit a particular focus on the sociological analysis of aging and informal care. A qualitative methodological approach was adopted, as it is considered better suited to capture meanings and to deeper understanding of the participants experiences. 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted with informal caregivers of dependent elderly family members. As regards the main results obtained with the investigation, we highlight the different experiences of the reality in informal care influenced by gender, age, qualifications and socio-economic status; as the existence of difficulties in caring for a close dependent person, especially when suffering from diseases related to dementia; the importance of the family's role to providing health cares and well-being to dependent members and the reproduction of gender stereotypes in care.
