Abstract(s)
In recent years, there has been a rapid growth in the use of fibre reinforced composite materials in engineering applications and this will be continuing. Particularly, in the automotive, aerospace and naval industries the use of composite laminates is associated with the reduction of weight and consequent fuel saving and improvement in performance. However, the sensitivity of those materials to impact loads is a serious obstacle to their widespread use. On the other hand, in such applications these materials are subjected to various hostile environments promoting therefore its degradation. In this context, this work was done in collaboration with the company Nelo and aims to improve the impact resistance of laminates used in building kayaks through enhanced matrix by cork powder. Subsequently, it was performed an exhaustive study of the degradation, in terms of impact strength, for several hostile environments.
