Abstract(s)
Philharmonic bands are one of the most popular musical groups in Portugal. With a strong tradition in the maintenance and diffusion of cultural and social values in the most diverse communities where they are established, they have had, since they appeared, a crucial role in the formation of kids and adults and even in their social integration. Some people call them "conservatories for the people" because they are true schools of citizenship and of socalled non-erudite music, but where some of the biggest names in national music come from. Created in Portugal about two centuries ago, they proliferate throughout the country, in villages, towns and cities and can be assumed as true vehicles of cultural transmission and values at various levels. The Pinhel Philharmonic Band is part of Pinhel’s cultural heritage, in which the tradition of philharmonic musical practice has more than a century of existence, materialized in different groups over the decades. The role of the Philharmonic Bands as vehicles that transmit values and culture was the motto for this research work, materialised in a specific case study that addresses Pinhel’s Philharmonic Band. In order to achieve this goal, Pinhelans were asked about the presence and the role of this band both in and for their community, which is an important local cultural element. In addition to that, the aim was to recover, systematise and disseminate Pinhel Philharmonic’s historical course.
