Abstract(s)
This thesis is divided into two chapters: Investigation and Internship at Community Pharmacy. The first chapter consists in a dissertation that approaches the influence of phytoestrogens in hormone-dependent breast cancer cell lineages proliferation. We can find phytoestrogens in a large variety of food and they have a similar chemistry to the mammals's 17B-estradiol. For that reason it is of big interest as an alternative to the Hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) used in menopausal women. Having that many works say that the classic HRT may have as a side effect an increased risk in breast cancer development, the phytoestrogens appear as a viable approach. By that, this study has as objective analyze the present works in this area to evaluate if the cell proliferation, that is seen in the HRT is also present when phytoestrogens are used. Concludes that, depending on the concentration of phytoestrogens as well as the absence or presence of estrogen receptors in the cells, the phytoestrogens may produce a stimulation or an inhibition of breast cell's proliferation. To extract the maximum benefit from the phytoestrogens, it's needed to be known the exact concentration at which these don't cause cell proliferation. For that to happen it's needed that the work on this field keeps increasing to improve the present knowledge. The second chapter has as objective to describe all the activities developed during the 800 hours of the internship at Fernandes Machado's pharmacy, as well as all the proceedings needed to its proper function.
