Abstract(s)
In the face of the challenges posed by the dynamics of global markets, innovation has assumed a central role in maintaining firmsâ competitiveness, making it essential for companies to differentiate themselves through innovative solutions capable of addressing the needs of an ever-evolving market. In this context, understanding the factors that influence firmsâ innovative performance becomes particularly relevant. Accordingly, this study aims to analyse the influence of the type of financing and public financial support on the innovative performance of Portuguese firms, using secondary data collected through the 2022 Community Innovation Survey (CIS 2022), referring to the innovation activities carried out by Portuguese firms between 2020 and 2022. Based on responses from 13,802 firms, two logistic regression models were developedâ an initial model and a final model incorporating control variables that proved statistically significant for both product and process innovation. The data analysis revealed that financing obtained through equity, debt financing, public financial support from the central administration, and public financial support from the European Union have a significant impact on the introduction of product and/or process innovations. In contrast, public financial support from local or regional sources did not provide sufficient statistical evidence to confirm its effectiveness in enhancing the innovative performance of Portuguese firms. Thus, this study contributes scientifically by providing empirical evidence that clarifies existing divergences in the literature and reinforces the strategic relevance of the factors under study for promoting innovation in Portugal.
