Abstract(s)
The purpose of the present research is centred in the comprehension and analyses of the motivational factors that impelled the elderly to practice physical activities and how these facts contribute to their physical and psychological well-being. Therefore, we have contextualized the active ageing problematic considering the ecological model of Lawton and the contributions of the self-determination theory from Deci and Ryan. To this end, we have described and characterized the senior university students throughout the social demographic analyses related to motivational styles, of the physical activity and psychological well-being, and in the relationship between all these variables. The present study (with a transversal nature) has a sample of seventy senior university students who are engaged in the Senior Universities located in Oporto and Santa Maria da Feira. The instruments administered protocol consist of: the social demographic inquiry, the physical exercise behaviour inquiry (BREQ-2) (Palmeira, Teixeira, Silva & Markland, 2007), or the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (EA/PGCMS; Lawton, 1975; Portuguese version by Constança Paúl, 1992) and the Mini Mental State Examination (Folstein & Mchugh, 1975; adapted to the Portuguese population by Guerreiro & Colabs, 1994). The results obtained in this study allow us to conclude that most of the participants have a healthy lifestyle and with their admission in the universities they have been improving their physical activities. 65 individuals (94.2%) say that those activities have an impact in their dayto- day lives. By applying the correlation methods, we can observe positive relations that are statistically significant between the external regulation, age and the number of grandchildren. The results indicate the existence of a negative correlation between the age and the introjected regulation and the ageing attitudes were positively related to the academic degrees and the time spent in the senior university.
