crucial. Apesar do reconhecimento dessa importância, persistem barreiras vinculadas a
Partindo do pressuposto
a nível social, físico e psicológico.
Mental health is emerging as an increasingly relevant topic, and understanding the interaction between the built environment and mental states becomes crucial in this context. Despite recognition of this importance, barriers remain linked to logistical constraints and the adequacy of specialized spaces that ensure the necessary care for the population. From this perspective, this dissertation aims to understand how architecture can be combined with therapy in the treatment of mental illness, particularly in young people aged between 15 and 24 years of age. Based on the assumption that the environment is crucial to their recovery, the aim is to understand how and with what characteristics the architectural space influences the treatment of mental illness, exploring the role of architecture as a therapeutic environment. The methodology adopted is based on a theoretical approach to framing strategies for designing therapeutic environments, complemented by a laboratory component through the development of an architectural project for a residential therapeutic center, which uses space, as well as the different senses it can awaken, for therapy. The principle behind this is to provide a dignified place for the recovery of young people, designed to promote interaction and support among them, as well as to provide spaces that allow them to learn simple everyday tasks, with the aim of enabling their (re)integration into society and fostering independence in the future. The research is further enriched by qualitative interviews with different professionals, including psychologists, clinical directors, and architects, with the aim of capturing practical perspectives and experiences in an interdisciplinary analysis that integrates architecture and mental health. In summary, it is proposed to highlight the role of architect as an integral part of therapy, from an interdisciplinary perspective in the design of spaces that complement treatments and promote the recovery process, through a sense of social, physical, and psychological well-being.
