Abstract(s)
Work in prison settings involves high levels of demand, complexity, and exposure to risk factors that can negatively affect professionals’ well-being. The present study aimed to analyze how work-family conflict acts as a moderating variable in the relationship between job stress and life satisfaction, using a sample of 142 professionals from the Portuguese prison system. Data collection was conducted online through the survey "Demands and Resources at Work: A Study with Prison Staff," hosted on the EU Survey platform. The access link to the questionnaire was sent by the research team to the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP), a partner in the project. The institution was responsible for disseminating the survey through its institutional mailing list, forwarding it to the directors of prisons, educational centers, and social reintegration teams. The results showed a significant positive association between stress and work-family conflict, and a negative association between stress and life satisfaction. However, work-family conflict did not significantly moderate this relationship. These findings reinforce the importance of implementing organizational measures that promote a better balance between professional and personal life, as well as the psychological well-being of prison system professionals. The implications of the results are discussed in light of the existing literature, and suggestions for future research are presented.
