Abstract(s)
Sexually transmitted infections represent an important public health problem and a preventable cause of morbidity and mortality. The academic community, as it continues to expose itself to vulnerable situations, becomes an important population to incite interest in the prevention of these diseases. This study's main objective was to understand the knowledge that students in the 1st and 2nd cycles of Higher Education at the Universidade da Beira Interior have about sexually transmitted infections and their prevention. A digital and anonymous survey, previously validated by the Ethics Committee of the Universidade da Beira Interior, was sent by institutional email to students at this university. The sample for this study consisted of 356 students, aged between 18 and 54, the majority of whom reported having already started their sexual activity. The level of knowledge about sexually transmitted infections is higher among students at the Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde, who are over 21 years old and are female. Most students recognize that the use of condoms during sexual relations is a measure to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections, however this practice is not adopted continuously by individuals. Females, compared to males, use more appropriate prevention measures and have a higher level of concern about the issue. Students use more often the internet and doctors or other health professionals as ways to increase their knowledge about measures to prevent sexually transmitted infections. The student population at the Universidade da Beira Interior still has some gaps in their knowledge about sexually transmitted infections and their prevention measures, making it imperative to adopt measures to increase their health literacy.
