Market globalization, extremely aggressive competition conditions and increasing demands from consumers are forcing organizations to adopt competitive strategies which include total quality management (TQM) and Innovation. A compromise between these convergent dimensions can create ideal conditions to improve organizational performance and meet the challenge of competitiveness. This research aims to analyze the impact of quality on innovation and innovation in quality and also the synergistic effect of both dimensions on organizational performance. Research is developed from a conceptual framework where the issues of quality and innovation and the impact of both dimensions in the organizational performance are considered. The theoretical research is supported by an empirical study for identifying and analyzing a broad range of effects between the tree dimensions considered. The hypotheses were tested using data collected through a questionnaire answered by 218 ISO 9001:2008 certified organizations. The impact of the adoption of TQM principles on innovation and the of innovation outputs on the adoption of TQM principles were tested through multiple linear regression models. To analyze the synergistic effect of TQM and innovation on organizational performance, a conceptual model was developed. Partial least squares method was employed to estimate the proposed structural equation model (SEM). Generally it is possible to conclude that the adoption of TQM principles plays a key role in innovation activities and the innovation outputs have an impact in the adoption of TQM principles. About synergistic effect, results show that innovation has a significant effect on financial performance and TQM has a significant effect on no financial performance.
