Abstract(s)
The National Institutes of Health consensus on impotence has defined erectile dysfunction in 1993 as the persistent inability of male to achieve and/or maintain an erect penis to permit satisfactory sexual intercourse. This condition affects millions of men in any age, but its prevalence is closely associated with aging, and it is estimated that about fifty percent of men, aged 40-70, experience some degree of this disease. Medical devices, namely penile prostheses and vacuum devices have been part of the therapeutic alternatives of erectile dysfunction for several decades. However, in the ‘90s, with the arrival of type-5 phosphodiesterase, the treatment of erectile dysfunction suffered a revolution. This class of drugs, which is currently considered the first line of treatment, is ineffective in about 30% of patients, thus continuing to require medical devices due to their high satisfaction and efficacy rates. As a result, over the years, medical devices used to treat erectile dysfunction were undergoing evolutions in order to adapt to the current reality. Thus, this dissertation aims to present in a structured way the evolution and innovation that medical devices, used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, had since its inception, as well as to compare several studies, mainly concerning to patient satisfaction, subject to these kinds of therapeutic modalities.
