Abstract(s)
do país.
The main objective of this investigation is to propose the renovation of a building, in a high state of degradation, in the city of Mangualde. Given the current economic crisis in Portugal and the increasing interest and investment in tourism, the primary purpose of the property will be that of a hotel unit. Tourism in Portugal has wide interests that are spread through international markets, with different requirements, types and motivations, which is an important contribution to the richness of this country. All around the world, it is possible to see the abandonment of historical city centres and the consequent degradation of their patrimony. It is necessary to value and preserve each place, so that we and future generations are able to enjoy, appreciate and get to know the beauty and history intrinsically connected to that place. Therefore, we propose the conversion of Mangualde’s movie theater, designed by the architect Keil do Amaral in 1948. A building that had a great cultural and historical impact in the city, although now abandoned, is still a landmark in the region. The construction of the movie theaters dates back to the decades between 1930 and 1960, the Portuguese period of dictatorship, in keeping with the styles of Portuguese architecture in the 20th century. Nowadays, movie theaters are falling into disuse, verifying a similar situation in Mangualde, where there is possible to find some multipurpose rooms where films and shows are exhibited, which are empty and without programming schedules. The proposal to change the function of this building is a result of current social and economic concerns, allying the recuperation of cultural heritage with the market demands concerning tourism.
