Abstract(s)
a população neste tema tão sensível.
Health Literacy encompasses all the knowledge, motivation and skills to apply and access health information. Empowered citizens, should be able to make sound judgments and decisions in daily life, concerning issues as health and its promotion, as well as the prevention of disease. It is now considered as essential concept in public Health (1). Given the exponential expansion of means and forms of information transmission, as well as the great ease of access to it, it becomes imperative to train the population in this very sensitive topic. Scientific evidence shows that, compared to individuals with high levels of health literacy, those who do not have it, are more likely to misinterpret health information, have difficulty following medical guidelines, use healthcare services more inappropriately, have weak physical and mental health, high hospitalization rates, as well as lower life expectancy (2). From the media to communication, between users and professionals, passing through moments in the waiting room, or the medical prescriptions themselves, there are several mechanisms and potential weapons to combat the lack of health literacy in Portugal. This monograph intends to establish and define strategies for improving and empowering the community, always with the intention of evolving with this grate challenge of contemporary health.
