Abstract(s)
Family Environment Scale (CHES) e Family Distress Index (FDI).
The main purpose of the present study is to evaluate the impact of social distancing on conflict and family cohesion and its relationship with family distress and variables associated with the pandemic. The sample comprises 205 participants, aged between 18 and 76 years (M = 32.87, SD = 11.82). Participants responded to an online survey composed by the Portuguese versions of the COVID-19 Family Environment Scale (CHES) and the Family Distress Index (FDI). The results suggest a general tendency to consider that there has been no change in terms of family conflict and cohesion, compared to the period before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the areas where there was a greater perception of increased family conflict relate to decisions about who can be received at home and quick exits, while the perception of increased family cohesion is associated with helping others (in areas related to technology and health). Significant differences were found between participants with higher and lower family distress in the perception of conflict and cohesion in several family areas. Statistically significant associations were also found between the perception of conflict and cohesion and the adverse effects of the pandemic on the family, change in family relationships and family distress. The results are discussed in the light of the impact of social distancing on conflict and family cohesion and family distress in a pandemic context.
