Abstract(s)
incluindo aspetos físicos, mentais, sociais e comportamentais.
A nível
adversidades.
(EBM) e Questionário do Pensamento Perserverativo-15 (QPP-15).
Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), versão 28.0 para Windows.
Além disso, o papel do pensamento
Introduction: The Burnout Syndrome (BS) is characterized by a state of physical and mental exhaustion resulting from excessive chronic stress and can have serious consequences in various aspects of an individual's life, including physical, mental, social, and behavioral domains. Medical students, in particular, are especially prone to this syndrome due to the competitive and demanding nature of the academic environment. On an individual level, factors such as perseverative thinking, characterized by the continuous repetition of negative thoughts and worries, have been associated with BS, as they can impair the ability to maintain emotional balance and cope with adversities. Objectives: We aim to investigate the relationship between perseverative thinking and BS in medical students. Methods: This study is an observational, cross-sectional descriptive study. An online questionnaire was administered between December 2021 and January 2022. Participants were medical students from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Beira Interior (FCS-UBI). The instruments utilized included a Sociodemographic and Academic Data Questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout InventoryStudent Survey (MBI-SS), and the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire-15 (PTQ-15). Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 28.0 for Windows. Results: The sample consists of 257 students (mean age 21.61±2.79, 82.1% women), from the 1st to the 6th year of the medical course at FCS-UBI. Burnout levels are high, being higher among students in pre-clinical years and older students, particularly regarding efficacy. Regarding perseverative thinking, gender and self-assessment of academic performance are related variables, with the model explaining 18.1% of the variance. There is a significant relationship between perseverative thinking and burnout, with the model explaining 19.2% of the variance in burnout. Other variables related to burnout are self-assessment of academic performance and satisfaction with the course. Conclusions: The high prevalence of burnout in this population highlights the importance of implementing personalized psychological support programs in universities and promoting a university environment that values academic satisfaction and recognizes student performance. Additionally, the role of perseverative thinking is significant in the dynamics of burnout. Interventions aimed at reducing perseverative thinking can, therefore, be particularly effective in mitigating burnout symptoms and promoting more stable psychological well-being among university students.
