Abstract(s)
A relevância deste
Throughout the last decade, we have been watching the emergence of a new form of Culture, which we have come to know as Urban Art. In Covilhã, its biggest promoter has been the Festival of Urban Art WOOL. The relevance of this phenomenon to the town and to the region, incentivizing a new type of tourism and generating a model which has already been replicated by other small towns and villages, inspired this dissertation, also motivated by the value of these works and the way they have been able to captivate Covilhã’s population, becoming a source of empathy and pride. As an object of Cultural Tourism, Urban Art has been conquering a growing protagonism, both in big urban centres and in smaller places, nationally and internationally. One of its main characteristics is the way artists take hold of degraded areas and, through their work, manage to recover a lost dignity, able to captivate not only the locals, but also many tourists who, more often than ever, elect Urban Art as the main motivation of their visits. Because this is still a recent thematic and has not yet been object of much research, particularly the case of Covilhã’s phenomenon and its consequences to the surrounding community, choosing it as an object of study acquires a particular relevance within a Master on Studies of Culture – since it is precisely as a form of Culture that this analysis intends to frame Urban Art, aiming to understand the impact of WOOL Festival as a promotor of Culture and Tourism in the City of Snow
