Abstract(s)
Set pieces have become increasingly important in football, particularly corner situations, often defining match winners. The objective of this study was to analyze, aiming to understand, the defensive organization in corner situations in football. After defining the indicators and variables for this situation, we’ve applied a specific built instrument (record sheet and campogram) to analyze the last 16 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. A total of 139 corner kicks were analyzed. Through an observational methodology the following criteria were analyzed and quantified: a) Match Time; b) Result; c) Defensive Organization; d) Initial Defensive Organization Zones; e) Initial Offensive Organization Zones; f) Defensive Organization Zones at 1st Touch on the Ball; g) Areas of Offensive Organization at the First Touch on the Ball; h) Corner Marker Foot; i) 1st Defense Ball; j) 1st Attack Ball; l) 1st Ball Touch Zone; m) Corner Result; n) Total Corner Time; o) Time at which the First Attacker Begins the Movement; p) Time at which the First Defender Begins the Movement; q) Corner Marker Time; r) Time of the Ball in the Corner until Touched by 1st Player and s) Ball Trajectory. The data collected indicate that the most commonly used type of defensive organization was Mixed Defense - Individual Dominance (79.9%), followed by Mixed Defense - Zonal Dominance (15.1%) and Individual Defense (3.6%) and Zone Defense (1.4%) to be used less frequently. The results also showed a preferred occupancy of defenders in the central area between goal and the closest corner post, either before the corner was scored (57.5% and 15.3% of the players respectively) or on the 1st touch of the ball after the corner is scored (52.6% and 16.4% of the players respectively), as well as the defending players tend to react to the opponents' action by starting their movement 0.36s after the attackers. These variables and developed instrument appear to be relevant and useful for understanding and improving the defensive performance of football teams in corner kick situations either to researchers, to managers, football coaches and technical staff.
