Abstract(s)
Introduction: Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, patients admitted to hospitals have been deprived of the right to receive visits from their relatives. It became essential to overcome the lack of physical contact by technologies as a way of communication. Thus, in order to understand the contribution of technologies to the humanization of care, it is important to evaluate, through a systematic review, the information published in the studies already carried out. Aim: To evaluate the contribution of Information and Communications Technology to the humanization of care, during the period of restricted visits to hospitalized patients, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Methods: A systematic review and narrative synthesis was carried out through a search in the PubMed / MEDLINE database in order to find articles, published in the year 2020, that could answer the research question. All titles and abstracts found were systematically evaluated. Those that were considered relevant were subsequently completely read to compare with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. For each study, data extraction was performed on a specific datasheet. Hawker et al's criteria were used to assess the quality of the articles. The contribution to the humanization of care was the outcome evaluated. News related to projects implemented in Portuguese hospitals were also included for discussion. Results: 14 studies met the inclusion criteria. There was a great heterogeneity in the origin of these studies, bearing in mind that they were carried out in 8 different countries. Seven themes were found from the analysis of the articles: Physical contact and family presence; Importance of information and communication technologies; Projects aiming Humanization; How to humanize a voice call / video call; Perspective of the patient; Perspective of the family and Perspective of health care professionals. The outcomes were very positive in all the included studies, however some improvement suggestions were highlighted. Discussion: Being present, physically or remotely, is essential for the well-being of the patient, his family and the medical team. However, the implemented projects must be planned and there must be professional responsibility for their fulfillment. Its execution must be carried out by a trained multidisciplinary team. The risk of passing on inconsistent information to family members can make them even more anxious, so there must be rigor in the implementation and execution of these projects. Conclusion: Information and communication technologies have proven to be an ally in the process of humanizing health care. With proper compliance with these new communication projects, there will be great applicability in a post-Pandemic period.
