A Covilhã é uma pequena cidade da Beira Interior que possui um edificado de
pequena escala, o que pode ser mais bem observado na zona histórica. É próximo a esta,
na Travessa da Rua Morais do Convento que está implantada a chamada “Torre de Santo
António”, um edifício de 21 andares localizado numa área muito pouco movimentada
sem muito edificado ao redor, o que faz com que pareça um objeto que não pertence ao
conjunto da malha urbana. Para além de alto é um objeto inacabado e abandonado há
muitos anos, e o impacto que proporciona na envolvente é significante. Assim, é
chamado de “torre”, e será este o tema da dissertação, onde se pretende estudar a
tipologia e chegar à resposta da pergunta - Qual a definição geral de tipologia torre e,
quais as características que a faz tomar essa nomenclatura? – para isso a metodologia
escolhida passará por analisar outros exemplos de edifícios da mesma natureza e o seu
respetivo contexto, averiguando sempre uma relação direta com o objeto de estudo, a
Torre de Santo António. Logo, haverá um estudo mais aprofundado deste objeto
arquitetónico envolvendo temas como do projeto e da construção, mas também uma
análise do seu contexto e impacto na envolvente. Para além desta questão, o tema do
futuro da arquitetura será o nosso assunto de reflexão, visto que cada vez mais existe
menos espaços para a construção de habitação, logo, a construção em altura poderá ser
uma solução.
Covilhã is a small city in Beira Interior with a small-scale building stock, which can best be seen in the historic area. Nearby, on Travessa da Rua Morais do Convento, stands the so-called “Torre de Santo António”, a 21-storey building located in a very quiet area without much building around it, which makes it look like an object that doesn't belong to the urban fabric as a whole. As well as being tall, it is an unfinished object that has been abandoned for many years, and the impact it has on its surroundings is significant. As such, it is called a “tower”, and this will be the subject of the dissertation, where the aim is to study the typology and find the answer to the question - What is the general definition of the tower typology and what characteristics make it take on this nomenclature? - To do this, the chosen methodology will be to analyze other examples of buildings of the same nature and their respective context, always looking for a direct relationship with the object of study, the Torre de Santo António. Therefore, there will be a more in-depth study of this architectural object involving themes such as design and construction, but also an analysis of its context and impact on its surroundings. In addition to this issue, the future of architecture will be our subject of reflection, since there is increasingly less space for housing construction, so building in height could be a solution.
