Abstract(s)
Questionnaire (BRQ) e do Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).
Sleep plays an essential role in the healthy development and growth of children, and bedtime routines play an important role in their daily lives. Although routines have come under considerable scientific scrutiny, there are few studies that focus exclusively on bedtime routines. This study aims to analyze to what extent bedtime routines of schoolaged children are related to their behavioral difficulties and to their social competence. In this study, 126 mothers/fathers of children aged 6 to 8 years old participated and completed the Portuguese versions of the Bedtime Routines Questionnaire (BRQ) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The results of the multiple regressions performed indicated, on the one hand, that the more consistent the children's bedtime routines were, the lower the frequency of Emotional Symptoms, Behavior Problems, and Hyperactivity. On the other hand, the child's greater reactivity towards possible changes in routine has been shown to be associated with more behavioral difficulties. In addition, the more consistent and adaptive bedtime routines are, the greater the frequency of pro-social behavior. The practical implications for children's healthy development of establishing adaptive routines in the family context, particularly sleep-related routines, are discussed.
