Abstract(s)
Realizou-se uma revisão narrativa e mista da literatura sobre o tema Literacia em Saúde;
numa primeira fase, uma abordagem quantitativa, numa segunda fase, qualitativa. A
Health Literacy is a concept defined by WHO as a set of cognitive and social skills and the individual ability to understand and use the information, in order to promote and maintain good health. The interest in this concept has grown in the past two decades – worldwide - due to the proven impact both on people’s health and on the Health Systems. There also are identified Determinants, known to influence Health Literacy levels, which were explored in this dissertation. The goals of this study were to find a progression of the Health Literacy levels for Portugal, Germany and Netherlands’ populations; to analyze possible correlations between this progression and the Determinants of Health Literacy; and to try to understand if and how the national health Politics, programs and action plans implemented by each country contributed to evolution of the populations’ Health Literacy levels. A narrative and mixed literacy review on the topic of Health Literacy, was conducted; a quantitative approach, in an initial phase; then, a qualitative approach. The progression of Health Literacy levels are similar, however, due to the lack of methodological homogeneity between the different selected studies, it becomes difficult to rigorously compare them. Taking into account relevant Determinants, together with policies, action plans and measures of each country, their impact on the levels of Health Literacy of each population were perceptible. The political and social context of each country was significant to the characterization of which Determinants influence Health Literacy and its levels. This dissertation also emphasizes that which was previously identified: the clear need for further investigation in this topic.
