Abstract(s)
autoeficácia do aluno enquanto artista.
The present study aims at investigating strategies that may motivate students to follow a career in Visual Arts. Based on an action-research study design, this project aims at assessing the motivational levels of those students who attend Visual Arts Education courses at the school where this project is being carried out, i.e., Agrupamento de Escolas do Fundão. The study also reports the procedures for assessing the impact that a piece of Urban Art might have at this school, drawing conclusions from the perceptions of students, teachers, school director and the city’s cultural vice-council. The results corroborate those of previous investigations, indicating that students’ motivational levels much depend on the interaction of individual, social and ecological factors, as well as on the nature of the activities in which they are engaged. Students seem to choose Visual Arts as a vocational area, providing that it facilitates the development of higher concentration levels, learning expertise through the experimentation of a diverse range of artistic techniques and the possibility of actively engage with the educational and the city’s social environments. Educational institutions and living communities that transmit the idea that Visual Arts do not constitute a useful career are highly demotivating for these students. Artistic activities involving the creation of pieces of art of considerable dimensions, which also reflect the emotional engagement and the students’ artistic identity and expression are of paramount importance for keeping students highly motivated, as these act as promoters of artistic self-efficacy. Taking into account these results, the project will continue with a second action-research cycle, in which observations from the first action-research cycle here described can be applied: the realization of a piece of Urban Art in the art’s school building as the promoter of individual and artistic skills, developed through the experimentation of a variety of techniques applied in large dimensions. Such piece of Art may create a great visual impact on the school and city communities, which, in turn, might act as positive reinforcement for those who will decide to pursue an artistic career in Visual Arts.
