Abstract(s)
Neste no estudo
The personal growth initiative is a relatively new construct, proposed by C. Robitschek (1998), who already sees its relevance to psychology, being understood as an active and necessary process for individuals to reach their goals, where the subject identifies the changes that must be made to succeed in your personal goals. However, it is known that the depressive, anxious and somatic symptoms impair the individual at his functional level, bringing more suffering and poor quality of life, being more and more visible in its epidemiological expression. Based on the aforementioned aspects, with the present work, integrated in the project entitled "Research on mental health, quality of life and psychological well-being throughout the life cycle", it was intended to characterize the personal growth initiative according to some sociodemographic indicators, and to study their relation with the mentioned mental health indicators. To collect data, a protocol disseminated on line was used, among other instruments, a sociodemographic questionnaire elaborated in the scope of the present study to characterize the participants, the Derogatis (2000) Mental Health Inventory (BSI-18) of Personal Growth Initiative II (PGIS II) (Robitschek et al., 2012). In this study it was possible to count on 1095 participants. Through the results obtained, we observed significant differences between men and women at the level of the personal growth initiative. It was also possible to observe the relationship between the personal growth initiative and mental health indicators, which is characterized by a negative correlation between the variables, which, although weak, is corroborated by similar results found in other studies. Taking into account the results obtained, we understand the need for more research on the subject in order to explore the personal growth initiative and develop intervention strategies, especially with individuals with low levels of quality of life.
