Abstract(s)
This traineeship report incorporates the three essential parts for a pharmacist’s formation: a traineeship in Hospital Pharmacy and a traineeship in a Community Pharmacy, essential for the consolidation of all the knowledge acquired through the studies, and the development of an investigation work, which enables a link to pharmaceutical interventions in this this area. Therefore this report is divided in three chapters. The first chapter is about the master’s dissertation project whose purpose was to identify potential safety issues of semi-solid vaginal formulations trough the assessment of its osmolality, pH and acid-buffering capacity. The use of vaginal products is very common, not only in inflammatory and infection situations, which usually do not require long term use, but also in some daily situations requiring lubrication or hydration. Some technological characteristics of vaginal formulations are intimately linked with safety and performance issues and their assessment is of the utmost importance. However, there is a lack of information on technological properties of commercially available vaginal products. In this work 19 vaginal products were analysed and eight of which presented higher osmolality than the recommended. Among pH values measured, three products were more acidic and two more basic than the physiological values. The buffer capacity was also found highly variable and was not found a strong relationship between this parameter and the therapeutic indication / product’s allegation. For three of the analysed products the cytotoxicity was superior to cytotoxicity of N-9 in. Therefore we could identify potential safety issues among commercially available vaginal products that should be taken into account particularly when long-term use is required. The second chapter describes the knowledge and experiences acquired in the traineeship in Hospital Pharmacy in Hospital Sousa Martins, throughout 320 hours. Finally, the third chapter describes the professional experience acquired through the traineeship in Community Pharmacy in Farmácia Amorim, which occurred in a period of 480 hours.
