Abstract(s)
The curriculum of the Integrated Masters Course in Pharmaceutical Sciences (âMICFâ as abbreviated in Portuguese) includes two types of training in the professional environment: observational internships in the areas of community and hospital pharmacy on one hand and clinical analysis and hospital and community pharmacy internships on the other hand. Equally as important as active internships, observational internships offer more than just initial contact with the professional world. They also introduce the internee to active work and application of all of the knowledge acquired over years of study. Furthermore, a professional internship represents the culmination of technical and scientific knowledge acquired in the academic environment, integrating such knowledge with that obtained in the professional environment. The active community pharmacy internship took place at FarmĂĄcia Diamantino in FundĂŁo, with duration of 480 hours (12 weeks), while the hospital pharmacy internship was conducted at Hospital Sousa Martins in Guarda, with duration of 320 hours (8 weeks). Based on the work conducted in the aforementioned internships, the reports included in this document are divided into 2 chapters, with the first pertaining to a report on the community pharmacy internship and the second related to the hospital internship. I would like to emphasize the following aspects of the experience I âlived and breathedâ over a 20-month span: I observed some gaps in my training during the internship. My intention in broaching this point should not serve as a criticism but rather a suggestion for improvements to be made in the coming years, particularly in terms of legislation and management in the context of both communities and hospitals (purchasing, resource management, etc.), as well as the notion of expanding knowledge concerning vaccines (National Vaccination Plan, instructions for specific groups, etc.), biological drugs and assisted nutrition (enteral and parenteral). Nonetheless, I found that I was generally well prepared for the work I performed over the 20-week period. I responded well to the challenges that arose without a significant level of difficulty thanks to the technical and scientific rigor I had already acquired. I believe that the skills I acquired in these internships have supplemented my previous experience in the research realm for which I have received equivalences (Masters and PhD).
