Abstract(s)
Adverse life events play a significant role in the psychosocial development of the individual and may lead to difficulties in adapting to reality. These events seem to increase vulnerability to stress, as well as emotional and behavioral regulation difficulties that influence self-control and the development of psychopathic signs. These factors underlie the transgressive processes found in the forensic population, however there is not much data regarding the Portuguese female prison population. As such, this dissertation aims to understand the mechanisms associated with delinquent behavior, especially the impact of previous experiences of adversity in the female prison context. Data were collected through a convenience sampling process, with 40 women inmates of the Santa Cruz do Bispo Prison and 38 women from the general population. The assessment instruments used for data collection were the Antisocial Process Screening Device Self-Response Version (APSD-SR) (Pechorro et al., 2012), the Vulnerability to Stress Questionnaire (23 QVS) (Serra, 2000), the Low Self-Control Scale (Aguiar, 2018), and a semi-structured Life Events interview. Data analysis reveals that, in the forensic, there is a superior positive correlation between psychopathic traits and the impact of adversity experiences in the forensic sample, with inmate women reporting a greater frequency and diversity of these experiences. Finally, mental health problems are the most reported adverse experience in both samples.
