dc.description.abstract	O espaço rural tem vindo a sofrer um processo de transformação identitária e funcional pelo que se procuram alternativas à agricultura de subsistência pela introdução de novas funções associadas à ruralidade, onde o turismo tem vindo a ganhar significado. A actividade turística no meio rural pode contribuir para promoção a conservação ambiental, protecção e restauro do património edificado e em simultâneo a revitalização económica, social e territorial das zonas deprimidas. Assim, a relação entre espaço rural e turismo é relevante como impulsionador ao desenvolvimento e à fixação de população. Paralelamente, a arquitectura popular é um elemento essencial de identidade e preservação da imagem colectiva do espaço rural. Esta dissertação tem como objectivo elaborar uma proposta de intervenção urbana para um espaço rural no concelho da Calheta, na Ilha da Madeira, no sítio da Fajã de Baixo. Interliga numa abordagem multidisciplinar espaço rural e arquitectura popular, pela criação de um empreendimento turístico. A área de intervenção escolhida ilustra a realidade vivida no meio rural, entregue ao abandono e degradação. Um território de edificações dispersas e um número significativo de edifícios devolutos. O Projecto urbanístico de Turismo Rural Casas da Fajã de Baixo cria seis alojamentos com nove camas, proporcionando uma experiência personalizada da vida rural e a aproximação entre o indivíduo, a natureza e a agricultura. Aproxima ainda a área de estudo e a cidade através de percursos pedonais e de bicicleta num passeio ao longo da frente-mar. Espera-se que esta proposta constitua uma mais-valia para a população residente, para os potenciais turistas e para o concelho da Calheta.	por
dc.description.abstract	The rural space has been undergoing a process of identity and functional transformation, so that alternatives to subsistence agriculture by the introduction of new functions associated with the rural, where tourism has been gaining meaning. Touristic activity in rural areas can aid to promote environmental conservation, protection and restoration of the built heritage and simultaneously economic, social and territorial revitalization of the depressed areas. Thus, the relationship between rural space and tourism is important as a driver for development and the fixing of inhabitants. There for architecture is an essential element of identity and preservation of the collective image of the countryside. This thesis aims to develop a proposal for an urban intervention in a rural area of Calheta municipality, in Madeira Island, at the place of Fajã de Baixo. It links in a multidisciplinary approach the rural and Madeira’s regional architecture, through the creation of a touristic complex. The chosen area shows the reality lived in the rural environment, given the abandonment and degradation. A territory of a significant number of scattered and vacant buildings. The Urban Project of Rural Tourism Houses of Fajã de Baixo creates six lodges with nine beds, providing a personal experience of rural life connecting the citizen, the nature and the agriculture. It connects the case study area to the city, through the pedestrian and bike paths along the sea water-front. It’s hoped that this requalification could be an added value for the inhabitants, for potential tourists, and for Calheta.
