Abstract(s)
Supplementary feeding plays a major role in the growth of every children consisting on the process of transitioning from breast milk to solid food. Having a proper nutrition will allow the children to grow healthy as well as diminish the risk of developing issues at a later age. The Baby-Led Weaning is a fairly recent method and is an alternative to the traditional sup-plementary feeding method. Its goal is to encourage and stimulate babies to feed themselves since the age of six months, contrarily to what happens with the traditional method, where it is the parents who spoon-feed them with the supplementary food. In this method, the babies are considered to be the protagonists in the whole process of food diversification. However, it is recommended that breastfeeding/baby formula to be exclusive up until the age of six months and maintained, at a complementar regime, at least until they turn two years old. The Baby-Led Weaning is a method that has recently gained more and more popularity among parents who perform it, but its practice is still very controversial among health professionals, mainly due to the risk of suffocation and the nutritional deficits that may arise. This paper aims to explain the differences between the two methods, the advantages and disadvantages of Baby-Led Weaning and the opinion of health professionals and the parents who are practicing it.
