Abstract(s)
One of the best ways to keep the historic center alive is getting citizens to inhabit and enjoy it. For this to take place, it is necessary that the space meets the needs of the current population, keeping its references to the past. The green space may arise as a revitalizing part of the historic center. In this context, the object of study of this dissertation is on a space asset, specifically the Quarteirão Viela dos Congregados in the historic center of Porto, in which one observes the lack of green spaces that extend to the involving proximities. This option is justified, firstly, by the fact that green spaces confer numerous benefits to the urban environment and the people who use them, secondly, but not less important, because, at the scale of the block, it contributes to enhance the patrimonial, social and paisagistic components of the historical center. The literature review and the observations made of blocks in historic centers, reveal that green spaces are elements of recreational use, source of environmental, aesthetic and social diversity. Consequently, it must provide citizens (residents and users), from the historical center, the contact with nature provided by green spaces, and public areas may be sites with bigger potential, projecting green spaces as elements of urban regeneration. In short, the urban project for the Quarteirão Viela dos Congregados addresses three key aspects: environment, aesthetic and social, seeking to contribute to a more live and livable place.
