Abstract(s)
This dissertation explores the benefits and barriers of sexuality in aging, highlighting it as an essential component for the physical, mental, and social well-being of older adults. The research focuses on the impact of sexuality on improving quality of life, particularly in promoting cardiovascular, cognitive, and emotional health. On the other hand, it emphasizes the barriers faced by the elderly, such as social prejudices, the lack of representation in media and education, feelings of shame and guilt, and grief associated with the loss of their partners. Throughout this analysis, intervention measures are proposed, including the training of healthcare professionals in the field of sexuality, the creation of inclusive policies, public awareness campaigns targeting this age group, and the integration of sexology into geriatric care. The study also identifies a lack of research in this area regarding aging and notes that within the scarce resources available, institutionalized or homosexual elderly populations are among the most neglected. As future perspectives, it is suggested to further deepen the research on sexuality in aging and develop digital tools to provide emotional support and sexual education for older adults.
