Abstract(s)
To understand one’s perception of architectural space consists primarily in the comprehension of the individual’s previous experiences and the marks that it left throughout his life. Beyond the realities and concepts one has intrinsic in itself, the experiences and inheritances left by his ancestors dictate the way an individual perceives and lives through the space, either because of the configuration he attributed to the environment or the influence it exercised in the formation of his identity. Therefore, Architecture and Architectural space are a growing collection of identities, inheritances and knowledge, left from generation to generation, and according to the intention and sensitivity of the posthumous generations, will perpetuate with the memory and identity of places, and the memory of their past. Considering the importance of preserving the memory and identity of a place, urban rehabilitation plays a fundamental role in this task, regarding the comprehension and analysis of the place itself and its inhabitants is closely linked to it, ensuring that the space respects its inhabitants needs and identity – both individual, cultural and social. The space’s shape and function also play an important role as they are defined by the identity and needs of its users and urge to be optimized so that the user experience reveals itself as profitable as possible. Therefore, in order to apply the concepts and factors that define human perception of architectural space, this paper intends to understand the way these aspects determine the function of the workspace and connect with the daily life of the individual and societies. Considering the impact that professional life has on human’s experiences, understanding space perception and its factors in a professional environment intends to study its evolution, and point the trends that emerged in the last decades. Coworking introduced several changes in the labor market and came to give a response to the increasingly broad of needs of its professionals. Its diffusion at a global level has gained proportions that prospect a future which relies on the flexibility of workspaces to optimize material and human resources, in order to create synergies and opportunities both for companies, their workers, professionals and freelancers. In order to apply the analyzed concepts, this paper introduces a project proposal that combines the covered topics and concepts. The case of study, creation of a Coworking and Coliving center in the city of Leiria, aims to raise the awareness over the importance of creating flexible and optimized spaces, through solutions based on shared spaces and resources, that will provide with great opportunities of development for those involved with it, and consequently for society in general. In parallel, the proposal also intends to show the importance of urban rehabilitation in the city transformation and evolution, aiming to adapt its preexistences to societies’ new ways of living space, introduction solutions such as Coworking and Coliving.
