Abstract(s)
My professional experience, part of the Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, comprised three strands: laboratorial research, hospital pharmacy and community pharmacy. All these three professional approaches are included in this report. Chapter I regards to the research project description, matherials, methods and conclusions achieved with the study that aimed the determination of the hypothetical antifungal effect of antidepressant molecules, namely Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI), against Candida spp. isolates from vulvovaginal candidosis. This infection affects around 75% of all women at least once in a lifetime and causes symptoms that significantly decrease their quality of life. Recently investigation has been made regarding the activity of nonantimicrobial drugs against several fungal species (including Candida spp.) either as single agent or in combination with classical antifungal drugs such as fluconazole. This study assessed the antifungal potential of three drugs in the class of SSRIs specifically sertraline, fluoxetine and citalopram. All three were effective exhibiting both fungistatic and fungicidal effects depending on tested concentration. It was also assessed the antifungal effect resulting from the association of fluoxetine and fluconazole. This combination resulted in effect, particularly against strains resistant to fluconazole. Chapter II, reports my experience at the hospital pharmacy, with special highlight to the technical and scientific knowledge that I learned over the 7 weeks interning at the Cova da Beira Hospital Centre under Dr. Olímpia Fonseca guidance. Chapter III reports my internship during 13 weeks at the Sant’Ana Pharmacy in Covilhã under Dr. Paula Bártolo technical guidance. Here I described the pharmacy organization, responsibilities and tasks performed by the community pharmacist as well as the report of everyday situations that characterize the knowledge and skills learned as an essential part of my training to become a future pharmacist.
