Abstract(s)
There has been in recent years a growing debate around the current economic model and how this impacts the environment and maintenance of future generations. This debate has given rise to the concept of sustainability, which is today’s global society concern. The higher education institutions, as sources of knowledge and learning, also began to integrate this concept in their research, campus activities and curriculum. Given the relevance of the theme, the goal of this investigation is to assess if the knowledge leads to environmentally friendly attitudes and to a more responsible behaviors towards the environment. Numerous investigations have arisen in order to study and characterize the environmentally friendly consumer profile, and some authors used the relationship between knowledge, attitudes and behavior to do so. This research, supported on the Theory of Reasoned Action, seeks to verify the existence of relationship between Knowledge and attitudes and between knowledge and environmental behavior of a group of students. For data collection it was used a questionnaire aimed at assessing the overall environmental knowledge of the respondents, as well as the attitudes and behaviors in regarding energy issues (savings, consumption, interest, etc.). The results pointed to the lack of relationship between knowledge and attitudes, and between knowledge and behavior; the relationship between attitudes and behavior has proved to be weak. It was also found that men, students of the higher age groups and areas of Engineering and Social Sciences and Humanities are those with a higher level of environmental knowledge. When it comes to attitudes and behaviors the women are who seem to have more awareness on the issues. As regarding the practices undertaken by their educational institution, students show ignorance, and even some disinterest.
