Population ageing has become an increasingly prominent issue in the analysis of contemporary society. It is a phenomenon with visible impacts on the economy, the labour market, family structure, the social sector, social and health systems, and the definition of social policies, requiring societies to adapt to this new and challenging social reality. Portugal is one of the countries with the most pronounced demographic ageing, being the second most aged country in Europe. Given this reality, it is essential to create policies and social responses tailored to the profile and needs of older people, taking into account their expectations and wishes, and seeking to promote their well-being, autonomy and social participation. Given the growing desire for the option of ageing at home and within the community, as an alternative to institutionalisation, the concept of Ageing in Place has emerged, which advocates and supports independence and the promotion of active, healthy and positive ageing for older people in their own homes and communities. For this option to be possible, it is essential to create environmental, social, and cultural conditions that enable older people to continue their life plans. Organising activities that promote active living in the context where individuals reside is challenging for governments and local authorities. The research work in question is a descriptive case study on the Covilhã City Council's Activity Centre, an initiative that was considered a good local practice in terms of Ageing in Place and an example of encouraging active ageing and promoting leisure activities for senior citizens. This study aims to understand the contribution of leisure to promoting ageing in place and the importance of existing policies and (good) practices at the local level. Through the use of a questionnaire, administered to 37 users of the Activitiy Centre, and the conduct of 17 semi-structured interviews, with respective content analysis, with users, CAI professionals and a manager/head of the Centre, it was concluded that leisure is a strategic tool in the construction of inclusive territories and that it directly benefits the main aspects involved in the concept of Ageing in Place, thus confirming the CAI as an example of a response in the area of active ageing and senior leisure and considered as good practice in terms of Ageing in Place in Covilhã.
