Abstract(s)
The growth of the tourism sector on the island of Madeira has established itself, over the last five decades, as a driving force for the regional economy, which is constantly expanding. The attractiveness of its natural landscape and cultural richness has motivated significant flows of visitors, whose economic contribution supports the development of hotel infrastructure and buildings associated with the tourism industry. However, although this phenomenon may initially favor the preservation of cultural and landscape heritage, it is clear that these same values are sometimes instrumentalized for economic purposes, promoting processes of decharacterization that compromise the authenticity of the elements that are intended to be preserved. In one parish on the island this phenomenon is rare. Curral das Freiras maintains its essence preserved in amber. Its people, its mountains, its traditions. Perhaps because it does not have the much-prized “sea view” that attracts large developments, keeping the valleys, peaks and rivers for itself. It is from this parish that we propose the development of an intervention that highlights its intrinsic qualities and acts, in a judicious manner, in the points where this proves necessary, promoting the prosperity of the local tourism sector without neglecting the benefit of the resident communities. So we set off from Poço dos Chefes, a river beach on the bed of the Socorridos River, at the bottom of the valley.
