Os aerossóis são pequenas partículas no estado sólido ou líquido, suspensas na atmosfera, exercendo uma influência importante sobre o clima e o ambiente. Assim afetam o clima: através da difusão, transmissão e absorção tanto da radiação proveniente do Sol como da radiação térmica proveniente da superfície terrestre; através da intensificação ou moderação do efeito dos gases de estufa; agindo como núcleos formadores de nuvens, influenciando consequentemente o ciclo de vida destas e do ciclo hidrológico do planeta Terra.
