Abstract(s)
In today's industrial landscape, the development and optimization of new materials with environmental sustainability has become paramount. The confluence of innovative materials, circular economy principles and waste management is revolutionizing the entire industry. This encompasses a wide range of activities, from recycling and waste reduction to the incorporation of bio-based and biodegradable materials. The aim of this internship was to develop new materials and products of biological and biodegradable origin, using the Center of Excellence at COFICAB Portugal as a support, in order to increase the efficiency of its processes and optimize results. To achieve the stipulated objective, a methodology was defined which consisted of descriptive research to carry out a literature review, followed by a characterization of the company in question where the study was carried out and the development of a practical case. From the analysis of the results, it was concluded that, in the recycling of polyvinyl chloride, the incorporation of recycled materials into the production process showed significant potential, but the presence of copper impurities and the inadequate separation of materials prevent the desired standards and performance of the end product from being achieved. At the same time, the integration of bio-based and biodegradable polymers into production formulations is still under investigation, with the results obtained falling short of expectations, emphasising the need for further studies. With the conclusions reached, there is a need for further research into material recycling and the long-term performance of bio-based and biodegradable plasticizers. Although promising, ongoing research is crucial to optimizing materials and processes for greater sustainability.
