Abstract(s)
Currently, there has been an increasing number of cases of depression, as well as it’s association to suicide risks for the individuals. This mood disorder has a high influence in quality of life and funcional capacity, as well as an association to a high percentagem of patients that do not respond to current treatment options, or have recurring symptoms. Therefore, the focus during the last decades resides in the development of new treatment options and studying new disease mechanisms that can allow and improve diagnostics and follow-up. The microbiome has revealed to be of great significance for the development of this disturbance, as well as it’s evolution and resolution, where diferent theories have been used to explain it’s association, not only to depression, but as well as other mental health pathologies. This interaction might lead to the development of new treatment options, mitigating the symptoms of depression. Therefore, this monography aims to analyse the diferente aspects that characterize the interaction between the gut microbiome and depression, as well as the possibility of creating new approaches to this disturbance.
