A GR22, enquanto
proposta recorre a estruturas leves e reversíveis, capazes de introduzir novas formas de
habitar e aprender sem comprometer a autenticidade do edifício original. Paralelamente,
No
contemporâneos, respeitando as especificidades arquitetónicas e históricas do edifício.
No decorrer do desenvolvimento deste
do território.
This dissertation proposes the adaptive reuse of a former Forest Post, built in the 1940s during the Estado Novo regime, into the Casa das Sementes (“House of Seeds”) — a multifunctional space dedicated to research on native flora and to the organization of workshops on building practices and environmental preservation. Located within the Serra da Estrela Natural Park and integrated into the Grande Rota 22 (GR22) — a 600 km route connecting 12 Historical Villages of Portugal — the building carries a legacy linked to forest protection and management, now reinterpreted within the framework of contemporary sustainability. The rehabilitation challenge was launched by the Historic Villages of Portugal Network to the Integrated Master’s in Architecture at the University of Beira Interior, aiming to transform the building into a center for research and innovation that includes temporary accommodation for researchers and promotes activities open to the community. As a cultural and touristic infrastructure of reference, the GR22 provides a privileged context for fostering interaction between researchers, farmers, and visitors, reinforcing the cultural and environmental identity of the region while promoting the forest as a driver of knowledge and ecological regeneration. The proposed project envisions the transformation of the former Gouveia Forest Post into a hybrid space combining scientific research, temporary housing, and community experimentation, articulating memory and innovation under the designation Casa das Sementes. The intervention is guided by the principle of “revealing without rebuilding,” valuing the existing ruin as a historical testimony and active material of the project. The proposal employs light, reversible structures capable of introducing new ways of inhabiting and learning without compromising the authenticity of the original building. In parallel, a Watchtower is introduced as a symbolic and pedagogical element, serving as a metaphor for ecological vigilance and care, inviting a vertical reading of the landscape and a reflection on the role of architecture in the regeneration of the territory. As a whole, the proposal constitutes a critical and participatory device in which architecture mediates between heritage, ecology, and society, proposing a new ethic of intervention grounded in sustainability and the valorization of place. From a constructive standpoint, the proposal combines traditional techniques with contemporary methods, respecting the architectural and historical specificities of the building. In this process, a practical workshop will be promoted, focusing on the appreciation of stone, wood, and earth as identity materials. Supported by the Municipality of Gouveia and the Historic Villages of Portugal Network, the initiative seeks to revitalize the building even in its current ruined state, adopting a hands-on learning methodology and consolidating the Casa das Sementes as a space for ongoing research and education. At the same time, the project aims to contribute to the enhancement of the GR22 as a strategic axis for ecotourism and sustainable territorial development. Ultimately, this dissertation constitutes both a practical and theoretical reflection on the role of architecture in preserving traditional building techniques and creating spaces that foster biodiversity, proposing an integrative model that bridges past and future, local and global, memory and innovation. During the development of this work, devastating wildfires destroyed vast natural habitats of the Serra da Estrela, an event that undeniably reinforced the relevance and urgency of the role proposed here for architecture as an instrument of care, vigilance, and territorial regeneration.
