Abstract(s)
Introduction: In recent years, diabetes mellitus has become a primary and growing public health concern with several associated comorbidities affecting quality of life, both general and vision related. Thus, it is important to understand the current state of quality of life of affected subjects in order to better apply treatments adjusted to their personal needs. Objectives: To estimate and analyze socio-demographic characteristics and visual impairments in diabetic patients in the Covilhã Municipality compared to a non-diabetic population and to other epidemiological studies in other regions, as well as to identify and characterize the impact of these socio-demographic characteristics and visual impairments on the quality of life of diabetic patients in the Covilhã Municipality. Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on a population of 856 diabetics and a control of 40 non-diabetic subjects aged 45 or older. Both with valid sociodemographic, binocular habitual visual acuity and 39-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire results upon consultation with trained optometrists. Results: Of the 856 diabetic subjects analyzed, 384 (44.9 %) were female and 472 male (55.1 %) with a mean age of 67.2 ± 10.5 years. Within the 40 non-diabetic subjects, 18 were female (45.0 %) and 22 male (55.0 %) with a mean age of 70.9 ± 11.0 years. Better visionrelated quality of life was found in the non-diabetic subjects compared to the diabetic subjects in the 39-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire subgroups of eye pain, social functioning, driving and color vision by independent t-test. Within the diabetic subjects worse NEI-VFQ-39 scores were found in subjects with higher age, longer duration of diabetes, worse binocular habitual near and distant visual acuity, and female gender. Within the non-diabetic subjects, no significant association was found between age, sex, and the 39-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire. Conclusions: Some aspects of vision-related quality of life of diabetic subjects in the municipality of Covilhã are significantly reduced compared to non-diabetic subjects. Additionally, diabetes progression and worse visual acuity are related to worse visionrelated quality of life. Further studies focusing on the quality of life of diabetic subjects should be performed in the future in order to confirm the present results and thus allow for health services better adapted to the personal needs of the patients.
