Abstract(s)
estando incluída nestes a Síndrome do Intestino Irritável. A presente revisão narrativa
Estes capítulos descrevem tanto as atividades realizadas
durante este período como os conhecimentos adquiridos.
This report aims to describe my professional experience in obtaining the Master´s Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in the areas of Community Pharmacy, Hospital Pharmacy and Research. Chapter I refers to the research component and aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of prebiotics and probiotics in functional gastrointestinal disorders, namely irritable bowel syndrome. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, provide benefits to the health of their hosts, while prebiotics are a substrate that is selectively used by host microorganisms. Gastrointestinal functional disorders are identified as imbalances in the gut-brain axis characterized by the persistence of symptoms in the abdominal area, including irritable bowel syndrome. This narrative review aimed to analyze publications involving the effectiveness and safety of the use of prebiotics and probiotics in irritable bowel syndrome, particularly on issues such as the interaction between these products and the gut microbiota, the duration of supplementation and long-term effects, the definition of ideal dosages and regulation and quality control of these products. With the analysis of the results, it was possible to observe the effectiveness, mainly of probiotics, in improving specific symptoms of the respective disorder, however, the available data remain unclear due to limitations concerning samples methods of the studies evaluated and due to the existing flaws in regulatory entities. Despite evidence suggestive of therapeutic efficacy, additional multicenter randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials are still necessary to fill in the gaps in this subject, define measures to ensure the safe administration of these products, and confirm their therapeutic potential. Chapter II and III describe the internship report in Community Pharmacy at Farmácia de Orgens in Viseu and the internship report at Hospital Nossa Senhora da Assunção, in Seia, Guarda Local Health Unit (ULS-Guarda E.P.E), respectively. These chapters describe both the activities carried out during this period and the knowledge acquired.
