António Ferro foi um apaixonado pela vida, pela cultura e pelas artes.
A sua natureza entusiasta levou-o a interessar-se por todas as inovações que o início
do século XX oferecia.
A sua procura do novo, a sua vontade de viver em pleno o seu tempo fizeram dele um
observador atento da realidade, que ao longo de vários anos foi retratando como jornalista.
Assim, entrou em contacto com figuras determinantes de diferentes áreas que iam da arte à
política, da música ao cinema, da literatura à fotografia.
Em termos estéticos aderiu ao Modernismo, por representar o corte com o passado
conservador e serôdio, que ele recusava; mas também porque este movimento representava a
aposta numa nova sociedade construída por novos homens, que sonhassem mais longe e
fossem capazes de reedificar a Pátria.
Considerava a participação política como um dever patriótico, pelo que foi um dos
pioneiros na defesa da importância da propaganda como forma de afirmação e consolidação
dos regimes políticos.
Por esta razão estreitou a ligação com Salazar, que o convidaria para diretor do
Secretariado Nacional de Propaganda. À frente deste importante organismo desenvolveu um
conjunto de medidas inovadoras, destacando-se a sua «Política do Espírito».
António Ferro acreditava poder conciliar nesse projecto dois ideais que o
acompanharam toda a vida: Modernismo e Nacionalismo.
Como se viria a provar, a sua vontade e empenho em fazer de Portugal um país
moderno e culturalmente mais rico não foram suficientes para operar a mudança que
desejava.
O seu tempo estava desajustado do tempo da maioria dos homens que o rodeavam, o
seu ritmo era demasiado acelerado para aqueles que viviam em Portugal na primeira metade
do século XX.
António Ferro was passionate about life, culture and the arts. His enthusiastic nature led him to take an interest in all of the innovations that the early twentieth century offered. His search of the new and his desire to live his time fully turned him into a keen observer of reality, which he has portrayed as a journalist for several years. So, he came into contact with decisive figures of different areas, ranging from art to politics, music to cinema, and literature to photography. Aesthetically, he joined Modernism, which represented a break with the conservative and antiquated past that he opposed to. In addition, this movement represented a challenge on a new society made up of new men, willing to dream further and who would be able to rebuild the country. He considered political participation as a patriotic duty, and so he was a pioneer in advocating the importance of advertising as a form of affirmation and consolidation of political regimes. For this reason, he narrowed the relationship with Salazar, who invited him to be the director of the National Secretariat of Propaganda. At the top of this central institution, he developed a number of innovative measures, highlighting its «Política do Espírito». António Ferro believed that he could recombine in this project two ideals that have accompanied him all his life: Nationalism and Modernism. However, his willingness and commitment to make Portugal a modern and a culturally richer country were not enough to make the change that he longed for. He was ahead of the time of most of the men who surrounded him and his pace was too fast for those who lived in Portugal, in the first half of the twentieth century.
