Abstract(s)
The present work arises in the scope of the conclusion of the 2nd cycle of studies, of the Master in Clinical and Health Psychology, University of Beira Interior (UBI). This is a study that is inserted in the extended project "Research in Human Behavior and Biomedicine", approved by the ethics committee of the Faculty of Health Sciences of UBI. The psychological state of each individual affects his physical condition. There is a number of evidences that show that depression, anxiety, and also stress have a high incidence in people suffering from hypertension (Kaplan & Nunes, 2005). In Portugal, cardiovascular diseases continue to be one of the main causes of death, accounting for around 32% of all deaths (DGS, 2013). The main objectives of this study are to investigate the relationship between blood pressure levels (systolic and diastolic) and levels of psychopathological symptomatology, as well as to determine if there are differences between blood pressure levels (systolic – SBP, and diastolic - DBP) and levels of psychopathological symptomatology between men and women, as well as between younger subjects and older subjects. In addition, we intend to investigate if there are differences between the levels of psychopathological symptomatology and SBP and DBP, arrhythmias and pulse as a function of groups created from the medians observed. Subsequently, and with the calculation of mean arterial pressure (MAP), we intend to investigate if there are differences according to gender, age and schooling of the participants. As for the results obtained, there are no relationships between SBP and DBP and levels of psychopathological symptomatology, nor are there differences between SBP and DBP levels and levels of psychopathological symptomatology between men and women and among younger and older subjects. There are, however, significant differences between DBP and the obsessions-compulsions, interpersonal sensitivity and hostility, and also according to participants' level of education and gender with MBP levels.
