Abstract(s)
The identity of a country, a region, a city or a village can be defined by the role each individual plays in society and the way each one behaves in their cultural context. In the case of villages, mainly because of their size, but also because of their geographic location, historical and cultural heritage, we can say that this identity depends a lot on their inhabitants, on their social characteristics, socially inherited or developed over time, on the way in which they see the world and how they position themselves in relation to it. Villages are a reflection of people, their inhabitants, and people reflect the space in which they are located. In this sense, we can think of a collective portrait that defines or represents the cultural identity of a village. It is an ongoing process that is constantly being updated, which means that it is perpetual, but it is subject to change, whether by internal or external influence, whether at the private or public level. This collective portrait is built from the relationship between internal and external characteristics. Internal, through individual actions, memories and stories of each person; external, by the influence of all the people with whom they relate. These cultural characteristics directly define the construction of our identity, since they are a fundamental part of life in society in any village. This research project proposes a collective portrait of the historical village of Idanha-a- Velha, based on a bibliographical review, theoretical framework, state of the art, and the creation of an artistic work in the context of Media Arts, and in the form of an installation interactive video. The installation, as a practical element of study, uses image, sound and fragmented information from the various inhabitants of the village that works or reacts to the positioning in the spectators space. An artistic and conceptual representation, not of the Village itself, of its historical and heritage value, but of its cultural identity, its inhabitants, their lives, their daily lives, the stories that portray them and the way they relate to each other. Past, present and future are shifting forms represented in the form of fragments that make up the identity of each place, each space, each story. Identity where the protagonists are and always will be the people who live there. The main objective of this project is to analyze and reflect on the potential of video installation as a characterization of a specific community, a village.
